Flying Squirrels - Fragile to Fearless Flyers
Meet the Tiny Nighttime Acrobats Living in Our Woods

The talk will take people behind the scenes of wildlife rehabilitation and through the three stages of Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Release, told through the story of eight tiny Southern Flying Squirrels: from just four grams (less than 1/5 ounce) and needing round-the-clock care, all the way to their first glides and eventual release back into the wild.

About Elaine Bailey-Anderson:

Elaine Bailey-Anderson is a licensed wildlife rehabilitator, educator, former Board Member, and Volunteer Program & Community Outreach Coordinator with Appalachian Wildlife Refuge (Appalachian Wild). Since joining Appalachian Wild in 2024, she has volunteered more than 4000 hours caring for injured and orphaned native wildlife.

Appalachian Wild is one of only two facilities in Western North Carolina licensed to rehabilitate all native wildlife species, and Elaine has cared for everything from squirrels and opossums to rabbits, groundhogs, bats, and songbirds. She has a particular love for Southern Flying Squirrels and loves helping people discover the extraordinary wildlife living, often unseen, right alongside us.
